Every week we pick out the AI changes that matter to UK businesses: the AI assistants that can now connect to the software you already use, and the changes at ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Copilot. Each item says what changed, what it means for you and how to switch it on, with a link to the vendor's own announcement.

Checked on 16 October 2026 against each vendor's own page. New to connectors? Most of these use MCP, the standard way an AI assistant plugs into business software. Our guide what MCP is and why it matters explains it in plain English.

Xero connector for Claude: connect Xero to Claude in a few minutes#

Xero now connects to Claude in two ways: a one-click Xero connector in Claude's connectors directory for business owners, and the Xero Remote MCP, which became generally available on 13 October, for developers building custom automations.

What it means for your business: with the connector, you can ask Claude “what was our profit last quarter?”, “who owes us money and what's overdue?” or “what's our cash position against what we owe?” and get answers from your live Xero data, with links back to the Xero report, invoice or contact each answer came from. Xero says it's read-only at launch, so Claude can't edit invoices or post transactions, and your data isn't kept after the chat or used to train AI models.

How to use it (the connector, for business owners):

  1. In Claude, open the connectors directory and add Xero.
  2. Sign in with your usual Xero login and choose the organisation to connect.
  3. Start asking about your finances.

It works on any Claude plan, including free, with an active Xero subscription, and Xero doesn't charge for the connection. No developer setup is needed.

For developers (the Remote MCP): the hosted server at https://api.xero.com/mcp/v1 launched with 39 tools that can read and change records (invoices, contacts, bank transactions, quotes, payments, reports). It needs a Xero developer app (“Auth Code with PKCE”) on Xero's Core plan or above for live data, and an MCP-capable tool such as Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor or VS Code. Start with Xero's demo company and approve each action. If you want Claude or your own systems to do things in Xero, not just read it, that's the kind of workflow we build and look after for clients (AI managed services).

Xero in Google Gemini: ask Gemini about your Xero accounts#

Xero has launched a connected app for Google Gemini, announced on 14 October, which brings live Xero figures into Gemini conversations. Xero says it's the first financial management platform to do this.

What it means for your business: ask Gemini for your cash position, a profit and loss summary, overdue customer balances or bills due this week, and get charts such as aged receivables in the chat. Anything that changes your books, such as issuing an invoice or sending a payment reminder, waits for you to confirm it first. Xero says the data is used only for your session and isn't used to train Gemini.

How to use it:

  1. Go to gemini.google.com and sign in.
  2. Click Customize in the sidebar (under More if you can't see it), then Connectors.
  3. Find Xero, click Add and sign in to Xero to approve access.

Xero hasn't yet said which countries or Gemini plans get it first, so if Xero isn't in your Connectors list yet, check again later. Scheduled “tasks” (for example, a daily cash summary) are coming soon on eligible plans.

Claude for Google Docs, Sheets and Slides#

Since 6 October, Claude can work inside Google Docs, Sheets and Slides. A Google Workspace add-on puts Claude in a sidebar, and new connectors let Claude create and edit Google files from a chat. Both are in beta.

What it means for your business: ask Claude to tidy a tender response in Docs, build a summary tab in a job-costing sheet or turn notes into a slide deck, without copying and pasting between windows. By default Claude asks before each edit; in Docs it can suggest changes for you to accept or dismiss.

How to use it:

  1. Install “Claude for Google Workspace” from the Google Workspace Marketplace (needs a paid Claude plan).
  2. Open a file and choose Extensions > Claude > Open Claude.
  3. To use the connectors from claude.ai, turn on the Google Docs, Sheets and Slides connectors. On Team and Enterprise plans, an owner must enable them first.

Your Google Workspace admin can also roll the add-on out to the whole company or to selected groups. Leave “Ask before edits” switched on until you trust how it works.

BambooHR connector for Claude#

BambooHR launched a Claude connector on 8 October, the first built on its new BambooHR MCP server. It's in open beta at no extra cost for BambooHR customers who have a Claude subscription.

What it means for your business: managers can ask “who's off next week?”, employees can check their holiday balance and request time off, and HR can run saved reports, count headcount by department or review open roles, all from Claude. It works as the signed-in person, so nobody sees more than they already can in BambooHR, and approval workflows still apply.

How to use it:

  1. A BambooHR admin goes to Settings > Apps, turns on AI Connectors and chooses who can connect (admins only by default).
  2. In Claude, add the BambooHR connector with your address: https://yourcompany.bamboohr.com/api/mcp.
  3. Click Connect, sign in to BambooHR and click Allow Access.

The connector can make changes, such as booking holiday or updating a phone number. If you only want answers, use Configure to switch off the tools that write.

Nimble MCP: connect Nimble CRM to Claude and ChatGPT#

Nimble, the CRM aimed at small teams, launched Nimble MCP on 13 October. It connects Nimble to Claude and ChatGPT, and it's included in every Nimble plan at no extra charge.

What it means for your business: paste in a call summary and ask the assistant to log it, create the follow-up task and draft a recap email, or ask “which clients haven't we spoken to in 60 days?”. It can create contacts, add notes and merge duplicates after you approve a preview. Deals are read-only for now, and it drafts emails but doesn't send them.

How to use it (Claude):

  1. Go to Settings > Connectors > Add custom connector.
  2. Name it Nimble and paste https://app.nimble.com/mcp.
  3. Click Connect, approve the Nimble sign-in, then switch Nimble on from the + menu in a chat.

In ChatGPT it needs a Pro, Business, Enterprise or Edu plan and Developer mode switched on; Nimble lists the steps on its setup page.

Gemini 4 Argon: Google's new top model in the Gemini app#

Google released Gemini 4 Argon, its most capable model, on 13 October. It's available in the Gemini app for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, through the API, and in Gemini for business.

What it means for your business: Google says it gives more direct answers with less hedging, follows style instructions better and is stronger at long, multi-step work in areas such as finance, legal and tax. A new toggle lets you hand Gemini a task to keep working on while you're away from your desk. Gemini now also connects to more than 40 apps, including Shopify and Adobe.

How to use it:

  1. Open the Gemini app or gemini.google.com on a Google AI Pro or Ultra plan.
  2. Pick Gemini 4 Argon, or switch from chat to tasks for longer jobs.

For developers, Google's introductory API price is $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, rising to $4 and $20 after 30 November 2026.

ChatGPT: GPT-6 and Intelligent UI for every user#

OpenAI started rolling out GPT-6 with “Intelligent UI” in ChatGPT on 7 October: first to Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise, then to the Free and Go plans from 8 October. Intelligent UI means answers can mix text with charts, tappable buttons, forms and small interactive tools, depending on the question. ChatGPT can also start answering while it's still thinking, so replies arrive sooner.

What it means for your business: a question like “compare these three supplier quotes” can come back as a side-by-side table or chart you can work with, rather than paragraphs, and you can ask it to build a quick calculator for the job in hand. Staff on free accounts now get a GPT-6 model too, so check your AI policy covers what they paste in.

How to use it: nothing to switch on; it arrives in ChatGPT's Chat tab as the rollout reaches your account. On Enterprise, it depends on your admin's settings.

Claude Dashboards: live business dashboards from a chat#

Anthropic launched Claude Dashboards in beta on paid Claude plans on 8 October. You ask a question in plain English and Claude builds a dashboard from your connected data, which updates as the data changes.

What it means for your business: “show this quarter's revenue by region” becomes a shareable dashboard. You can click any number to see the query behind it, and each chart shows when it was last refreshed. It works with connected data sources such as Salesforce, BigQuery, Snowflake and Databricks.

How to use it:

  1. Connect your data source in Claude's connectors.
  2. Ask for the dashboard you want in plain English.
  3. Check each chart's refresh time before you rely on it.

On Enterprise plans an admin must switch it on first (Organization settings > Artifacts). Anthropic positions it for quick questions, with deeper analysis handed off to a BI tool.

Claude Haiku 5.5: a much cheaper small model for developers#

Anthropic released Claude Haiku 5.5 on 7 October, its fastest and lowest-cost model, at $0.10 per million input tokens and $0.50 per million output tokens (for prompts up to 100k tokens). That's a tenth of Haiku 4.5's price. It also halved Sonnet 5.5's cache-read price.

What it means for your business: if you pay for software that runs AI behind the scenes, such as support bots, document sorting or CRM updates, running costs can fall sharply. It's worth asking your developer or supplier whether they're switching.

How to use it: developers use the model ID claude-haiku-5-5 on the Claude API, AWS, Google Cloud or Microsoft Azure.

Microsoft 365 Copilot Business: pay-as-you-go on by default from 1 December#

From 1 December 2026, new Microsoft 365 Copilot Business licences bought through a Microsoft partner (CSP) will have usage-based billing switched on by default. Microsoft announced the date on 1 October (it was previously 2 November).

What it means for your business: usage-based features, such as Copilot Cowork, can add charges on top of the licence. The default limit is 4,000 Copilot Credits per user per month, so a 20-person firm could use up to 80,000 credits a month before anything stops it. The UK isn't on Microsoft's list of excluded countries.

How to use it:

  1. Before you buy or renew, ask your Microsoft partner how usage-based billing will be set up on your account.
  2. Have your admin set a spending limit that suits your budget; admins can adjust the default.
  3. Check Copilot Credit usage monthly for the first few months.
